Video can show your constituents and stake-holders what they are getting for their money

The range of services and quality of service offered by public services is often not appreciated or understood.

At Croydon Council, they know what the residents of their borough need and offer some of the best services in the country. Encouraging business start-ups in the borough is a priority and Croydon employs novel and creative tools to help budding entrepreneurs as shown in the short film below.

The above movie was edited for use on their website and produced as a DVD for use on exhibition stands, plasma screens and at business meetings. The entire project was conceived, shot and edited for only £2500 and can be used again and again.

Top tips for Public Sector video:

1) Control. Assign one person in your organisation to manage the video production. this needs to be a full-time employee who isn't planning to be on holiday or away for any reason for the duration of the project. Previous media experience helps but isn't essential.

2) Goals. If your audience could take only one thought away with them from watching your film, what would it be? Be specific about the end result. Is this for internal use or public? Is it time sensitive or does it need to be useable for several years? Will it need to stand alone or will it be part of a presentation? There are many more factors to consider so please contact me if you'd like to know more David Hymans 020 7617 7944

3) Content. Keep it really simple. Stick to one or two core concepts per film. Repeat your key points at least three times. Get into the point of your film as quickly as possible - avoid long intro's. Be ruthless in the editing. Can you make it more interesting? Can we shoot outside, on the roof, in the park, at a facility or works site? If you need to include people who hate talking to camera, then keep their piece very short and use voiceover as much as possible.

4) Length. Make it as short as it can be. The movie above is only about 3 mins but gets loads of information across. If it must be long then break it down into chapters or even seperate films.
