First impressions count for web users:

It takes less than 50 milliseconds for you to decide if you like a website!

Researchers found that the brain makes decisions in just a 20th of a second of viewing a webpage.

The study, published in the journal Behaviour and Information Technology, also suggests that first impressions have a lasting impact.

Business to business websites

Your b2b website is the hub of your marketing efforts so ensure all your other marketing activity will drive people to your site. Very soon your site will become an invaluable part of your identity as a company. Something this important deserves your attention. Here are just 4 points which apply to practically every corporate website:

  1. Content
How relevant the content is to your audience - do you have what they are looking for on your website? Are you focussed on benefits? Do you talk about their needs and requirements?

  2. Usability & Navigation
How easy is it for your audience to get to the relevant content from any other page in the site. Ideally you should be able to get to any page within 2 clicks, preferably one.

  3. Distribution / Getting There
How your audience will find out about your site to begin with. There are many proven techniques to boost traffic to your site, but the ones which work best for your business will depend on your who and where customers are. This is a big subject in itself, but for some free advice, just contact me and we will give you some tips which you can use immediately and at no cost to you! David Hymans 07545 884153

  4. Wow Factor / Aesthetics & Beauty
This refers to the first impression your audience gets when they visit your site. It is tempting to think that content is all that matters, but the reality is that people make a judgement about your business in the first second after visiting your site (see panel on the left), that is before they read a word of the content. The look of your site is the 'face' and to some extent the personality of your business. In some instances it will be all your customers ever see of your business so it is very important to ensure that your customers see you in the best possible light.

Top web tips for your business:

Some general guidelines:

1) Buy your own domain name. If your current web designer or any other third party buys your domain name for you then they, not you, will have ultimate control over your website. This is a business risk and should be avoided at all costs. If you already have a domain name don't change it unless you really have to.

2) Don't be tempted by the 'free web hosting' offers for a business web site. You will have little or no control over performance, maintenance and robustness.

3) Make your content rich and compelling. Give away your secrets, tell your potential customers everything about the benefits of your services.

4) Promote your website everywhere. There are many ways to promote your site which are completely free, e.g. always have a link to your site at the bottom of every email your business sends out (called a 'signature' in Outlook). Ensure your web address is on every piece of print including ads, press releases, invoices, quotes etc

5) Avoid template pages and use a web designer wherever possible. You can do it yourself, but if you want a site which works on all browsers, is easy to navigate, loads fast and is search engine friendly then you'll find it is a steep learning curve to create a professional site by yourself.

Include your contact details on every page of your site, more than once if the page scrolls, which reminds me: David Hymans 07545 884153!
